April Fundraising

James, our Operations Manager, and Kishti, one of our volunteers, are about to start selling items regularly at a local boot fair to help our fundraising efforts. This is a great way to boost our funds and yet another way to fundraise for Prospex. If you have items that they could sell please give James a call on 020 7607 7626 or e-mail james@prospex.org

We are grateful for a local supporter who baked and sold cakes at her place of work raising £50 and to her husband who matched that with a cheque.

Amol another of our volunteers has joined our fundraising team helping Stephanie (who heads this up for us, another volunteer) write applications and search out new leads. If you want to raise money for us in whatever way you can think of get in touch and we will help you with the process.

The Lexis Project

Our new literacy and numeracy support programme began this month known as The Lexis Project and three young people have started and engaged really well. The trained volunteers each have a young person they will work with each week and help them at the pace that suits them. We hope some more young people will join them as well in the coming weeks. It is not an easy thing for young people to admit that they need help in this area and takes a lot of courage. Watch this space.

United House

United House have put together a fantastic work placement scheme together that will take place in May. The placement is for eight young people aged 18 years and over and will include CV writing and interview skills, and site induction followed by four days work experience.

Young people can choose any two from the list below:

Heating Engineer - Max 4 people
Internal Site Supervisor - Max 4 people
Electrician - Max 2 people
Brick layer - Max 2 people
Building Surveyor - Max 2 people
Quantity Surveyor - Max 2 people
Decorator - Max 2 people
Kitchen fitter/carpenter - Max 2 people
Resident Liaison Officer - Max 4 people
Receptionist & Administration - Max 2 people
Damp-proofing & plastering - Max 2 people
Scaffolding - Max 2 people

Course update

The current course is going well and the group have really come together well and are engaging in all the activities and discussions. Highlights have been the plate smashing session which helps let go of negative things in your life and a visit to the Old Bailey to help look at consequences. The residential is fast approaching which we will tell you about in the next newsletter.

We are privileged to have Frank Barnard filming and photographing the entire course for us, and when it is finished it will be made into a documentary to help us fundraise for future courses and parts will appear on our new website to be launched shortly.

Ebadur Rahman

We are delighted to have appointed Ebadur Rahman to head up our Street Team. He comes with a wealth of experience in youth work and detached and is already getting to know the young people we come into contact with. We have also been interviewing other potential candidates and will have news of further appointments in the coming weeks.

Tom Calvert

We are pleased to have Tom Calvert back with us working on some one to one work with a young person. Tom is a fantastic youth worker and talented musician who we have used in the past. He is working one to one with a young person developing self esteem and positivity using music. The young person is writing and recording his work which we hope to share on the site when it is completed.

Young mums cooking project

The young mums cooking project has started and is proving a great success. We have eight mums and five young children from five months old to three years. The purpose is to learn about nutrition, to raise the awareness of the importance of a healthy diet, also to gain the practical skills which will enable them to experiment, through experience, with the preparation and cooking of a variety of healthy meals, which they can prepare, cook and enjoy when they are at home on a budget. At each session they cook a meal and also take home the raw ingredients to reproduce the meal at home. We are now looking for funding to run another course to meet demand. Lifeskills

Prospex Works Lifeskills is a new strand that we are currently developing which will aim to train young people with trade skills working towards gaining NVQ qualifications and, in time, City and Guilds. It is the brainchild of Frank Barnard (one of our volunteers) who will head up this work when we have secured the funding. It is an exciting proposal that will prepare young people we work with for getting an apprenticeship. If you are interested in this new project please contact us and we will send you a proposal. Recuiting and funding

We have been actively recruiting workers for our Street Team and are very excited about how this has gone. We have a potential team leader with a wealth of experience and will give you more information in the next update.

We are also delighted to have received an amount of funding from Capital Radio’s Help a London Child to further progress this work.

February fundraising

By the time you read this Beef will have completed his swimming of 22 miles over February. It has been a challenge but he has got quicker, fitter and even lost a bit of weight whilst raising a bit of money for Prospex. It’s still not too late to make a donation.

Others are considering jumping out of a plane for us!!! More details soon if you would like to join them, and the Three Peak Challenge is being considered by others. Why not help the cause by joining one of these events or doing something else. Every contribution really does make a difference. Get in touch if you have an idea.
